One of the most frequently debated questions, amongst staff at schools and preschools, about drums is :

“Will we be hands-only, or will we use drumsticks?”

When I travel around visiting schools with my drums, this drumsticks debate often happens in real time, before my eyes, as soon as I have finished demonstrating the toms. The discussion is stimulated by the fact that the (pre)school may never have had access to very sturdy drums before, so the stick debate is altered. The goalposts have shifted, you might say.

I don’t have fixed ideas one way or the other, as both policies have advantages and disadvantages, and the pros and cons are all perfectly valid.

A small minority of schools do not decide on the spot. They take sticks but do not put them out straight away for the children to use. A kind of “wait and see” or “we’ll see” policy. Drums on the other hand usually go rapidly into service, “instant deployment”, to use military speak. I often hear them from the car park as I prepare to drive away !

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”1px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://songbong.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Young-girl-with-drumsticks.jpg” alt=”Young girl with drum sticks” title_text=”Young-girl-with-drumsticks” _builder_version=”4.11.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”40px||73px||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.11.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The pros are hard to argue against though :

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

There are obvious disadvantages to leaving sticks at the disposal of young children and generally the cons surface first :

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://songbong.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/hands-on-drum.jpg” alt=”hand vs drumsticks” title_text=”Hand drumming” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”203px||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.10.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.11.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Drums are percussion instruments and are designed to be repeatedly beaten. Children drums and school drums especially, should be made to cope with that kind of treatment.

Drumsticks : The Pros
